COVID-19 vaccination in mother during pregnancy better protects baby

In a study published online in the CDC′s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), investigators reported that women who were administered two mRNA COVID-19 vaccine doses during pregnancy had a 61% lesser likelihood of having a baby hospitalized for COVID-19 during the first 6 months of life.

Two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine administered later in pregnancy were tied to about 80% protection, compared to 32% protection when administered before 20 weeks of gestation. Investigators evaluated 379 infants aged less than 6 months, hospitalized between July 1, 2021 and January 17, 2022. A total of 176 infants admitted with a positive COVID-19 test were compared with 203 infants with a negative PCR test (controls).
